Wellborn Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Wellborn driveway and paver components in Los Angeles typically cost $295 to $21,240 installed, depending on whether you’re sealing an existing surface, replacing a cracked section, or tearing out and rebuilding the whole driveway. Most homeowners call us after a paver sinks, a driveway edge crumbles, or water starts pooling where it didn’t before. We stock Wellborn-compatible pavers, edge restraints, joint sand, and sealers on the truck, so most repairs happen in one visit.
The failure usually shows up as a trip hazard first: a paver tilted just enough to catch a shoe, or a low spot collecting water after rain. In Los Angeles, the real culprit is almost always what’s underneath the pavers, not the pavers themselves. Our native soil shifts with wet winters and dry summers, and a base that was never compacted right gives way within a few years. The pavers are just the messenger.
Sawyer Remodeling is an independent contractor, not affiliated with Wellborn. We work with their paver lines because we know how they behave in LA conditions, and because replacement parts and matching units are reliably available when a repair calls for them.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn’s paver and driveway line spans three main series: the standard architectural pavers (3-piece and 4-piece modular systems), the larger-format slab pavers sold for driveways, and their permeable paver line designed for water drainage. Each series uses different joint widths and base requirements, and that’s where compatibility gets tricky if you’re matching existing work.
The quickest way to identify what you have: flip over a loose paver and look for a molded manufacturer code on the underside, near one corner. Wellborn stamps their pavers with a two-letter series code plus a batch number. If the underside is smooth, check the edge profile instead: Wellborn’s modular pavers have a distinct bevel that other brands don’t match exactly. A mismatch of even 1/8 inch in bevel shows in the final pattern, and it’s why we always match by batch when we’re patching rather than replacing a full section.
OEM Wellborn pavers run true to spec and match the original color blend, which matters after a few years of LA sun exposure. Aftermarket equivalents exist, and we use them when a customer is on a tight budget, but the color match is never perfect on older installations. We’ll tell you straight: if the repair area is visible from the street, buy OEM. If it’s a side path behind a gate, aftermarket saves real money and functions identically.

Signs Your Wellborn Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Sunken pavers near the driveway edges. The base material has eroded or was never compacted properly. In Los Angeles, this typically shows up first along the sides where sprinkler overspray softens the soil underneath. Once one edge sinks, adjacent pavers follow within a season.
- Water pooling in low spots after rain. This means the sub-base has settled unevenly underneath your Wellborn pavers. Left alone, pooled water seeps into the joints, washes out the bedding sand, and accelerates the sink. It’s a $295 – $825 fix if caught early; a full replacement if ignored for two or three wet seasons.
- Cracks running through individual pavers, not just the joints. A properly installed paver driveway on a compacted base should never crack individual units. Cracks mean the base is flexing, likely from tree roots or a poorly prepared substrate. The paver wasn’t the problem; the install was.
- Loose or rocking pavers underfoot. Joint sand has washed out, and without it, pavers shift against each other. In Los Angeles, this is most common on driveways with any slope, where irrigation runoff moves through the joints faster than it can drain. It’s also a genuine trip hazard, especially at night.
- Edges separating from the driveway perimeter. The edge restraint has failed or was never installed. Wellborn pavers rely on a physical edge restraint to hold the field together under vehicle loads. Without it, the whole pattern walks outward, and you’ll see a widening gap at the boundary within eighteen months of the failure starting.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the honest price picture for Los Angeles, based on what we see across the city from Echo Park to Sherman Oaks:
- Driveway sealing: $295 – $825. Includes joint sand top-up, cleaning, and two coats of sealer. Takes one day.
- Paver repair (sinking, rocking, cracks): $413 – $2,950 depending on square footage and whether we’re re-using your existing pavers. Includes re-compacting the base, re-setting pavers, and new joint sand.
- Paver patio installation: $4,130 – $12,980. Full build: excavation, base compaction, pavers, edge restraints, joint sand, and sealing.
- Driveway replacement (pavers): $8,260 – $21,240. Full tear-out, base rebuild, new Wellborn pavers, new edge restraint, seal. Usually 5 – 10 days depending on size and access.
- Concrete driveway installation: $5,310 – $14,160 for comparison, for LA homeowners reconsidering whether pavers are the right call given the driveway’s slope and sun exposure.
Every price above is the full installed price: labor, materials, haul-away of old material, and cleanup. No change orders, no surprise line items at the end. We give you the written price before any work starts, and it’s the price you pay. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work for a full year: if anything we did fails, we come back and fix it on our dime.
DIY or Call Us?
Sealing a driveway? You can do that yourself with a rented sprayer, but a bad seal job needs a full strip and redo, and the $295 we charge is often cheaper than the redo. Re-setting a few loose pavers is doable if you’re patient and the base is still solid underneath. The part that goes wrong for DIYers in Los Angeles is the base: our soil expands and contracts more than people expect, and a base that’s not compacted in lifts with the right material will fail again within a year or two.
If you’ve got a paver field with multiple sinks, a cracked edge, or water pooling that’s been getting worse, call us. Matching Wellborn pavers by batch, re-grading the base, and getting the slope right for drainage is the kind of work that looks simple and isn’t. Luca Romano has seen more LA paver failures than he can count that started as a “quick weekend fix.” Call (254) 272-5876 and we’ll give you an honest assessment and a written price.
FAQs

A properly installed Wellborn paver driveway lasts 25 – 40 years in LA, while the base underneath typically needs minor re-compaction every 10 – 15 years. The pavers themselves are extremely durable; what fails is almost always the substrate, not the Wellborn product. Call (254) 272-5876 if you’re seeing settling and we’ll assess whether you need base work or just surface maintenance.
Yes, if the crack came from impact or a manufacturing defect, we can swap the single unit. If the crack came from base movement, replacing the paver without fixing the base will just crack the new one within months. We’ll tell you which situation you have during the estimate, and the written price covers the actual fix, not just the visible symptom.
Most repairs, including re-setting sunken pavers and re-compacting the base, take one day. Full driveway replacements run 5 – 10 days depending on size and access. We’ll give you the timeline in writing before work starts, along with photo updates so you can see progress without standing in the driveway watching.

For batch-matched OEM pavers on larger patch jobs, we source directly from Wellborn’s distribution and have them within a few business days. If you’re not sure what you have, send us a photo and we’ll match it before we show up.
