Sterling Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Sterling driveway and paver systems in Los Angeles typically fail through joint erosion, base settlement, or paver surface spalling, and most repairs run $295 to $21,240 depending on whether you’re sealing, replacing a section, or redoing the entire driveway. We stock Sterling-compatible pavers, edge restraints, joint sand, and base materials, and our crews can usually assess the failure and quote the fix the same day you call. You’ll know the system is failing when pavers start wobbling underfoot, the edges begin to spread, low spots collect water after rain, or a patch of pavers sinks visibly below the rest.
We’re Sawyer Remodeling, an independent Los Angeles contractor, and we’re not affiliated with the Sterling brand. We service Sterling systems because we know how they’re built, what wears out first, and what the right fix looks like in Southern California soil and sun. Luca Romano, our owner, has been working LA hardscapes for over two decades, and the paver failures he sees follow a pattern you can plan around.
Which Sterling Models This Applies To

Sterling paver and driveway systems share a common construction language across their residential lines, but there’s a compatibility gotcha worth knowing: older Sterling driveway pavers (pre-2015) were manufactured in 60mm thickness, while the current residential standard is 80mm. Mixing the two on the same driveway creates a visible height mismatch and a weak transition line. If you’re patching a section, measure the paver thickness first. Use a pry bar on a loose paver or check the edge where the driveway meets a walkway. That number determines whether we match with new old-stock, cut down an 80mm paver (which shortens its service life), or recommend replacing the full run for consistent thickness.
Sterling’s paver color batches also drift subtly year to year. A paver bought in 2019 will not perfectly match its 2024 equivalent, even in the same color name. For small repairs we handle this by pulling pavers from the least visible section of your driveway and installing the new batch there, then re-laying the pulled pavers in the repair zone. For larger failures, it’s often more honest to redo the full pattern than to leave a conspicuous patch.
OEM parts matter less for pavers than for, say, a kitchen faucet from KraftMaid or a Cambria countertop. Sterling paver systems are made from standard concrete mixes, and quality aftermarket pavers from reputable LA suppliers meet or beat OEM spec for density and color stability. The part that actually deserves OEM attention is the edge restraint. Sterling’s newer driveways use a polymer edging with integrated spikes, and off-brand substitutes warp in LA heat. We use the Sterling-spec edge or a proven commercial equivalent.

Signs Your Sterling Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Wobbling or rocking pavers under your feet. This means the joint sand has washed out or the bedding layer has thinned. Water gets underneath, and every car tire passing over pumps the paver like a piston, widening the failure.
- Edge pavers creeping outward into the lawn or garden. The edge restraint has failed or was never installed correctly. Without a locked edge, the interlock is lost and the whole field starts moving under load.
- Low spots that hold water for more than a few hours after rain. Think of LA’s occasional heavy downpours: water pooling means base erosion beneath. The paver surface might look fine while the support underneath is washing away.
- White, chalky blooms or pitting on the paver surface. LA’s hard water and intense UV work together. Efflorescence is cosmetic, but surface spalling (pitting) means the paver’s cement paste is breaking down and the aggregate is exposing.
- Hairline cracks running in straight lines across multiple pavers. This points to base settlement, not a defective paver. Individual pavers can be replaced, but if the cracks propagate in a line, the base underneath needs attention or new pavers will crack the same way within a season.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the honest Los Angeles pricing for Sterling driveway and paver work:
- Driveway sealing: $295 – $825
- Paver driveway installation (full): $8,260 – $21,240
- Driveway replacement (tear-out and base rebuild): $5,900 – $16,520
- Paver patio installation: $4,130 – $12,980
What drives the range in LA: the size of the area, the condition of the base, access for equipment, and whether we’re doing full excavation or working over a salvageable base. A small patch repair on a stable driveway might be a few hundred dollars. A full redo on a failed base in a tight Los Angeles backyard with no machine access lands at the top end.
Every job includes written pricing before we start, the specific paver spec and color, joint sand, and compacting. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work: if something shifts, washes out, or fails within a year of install, we return and fix it at no charge. We also commit to a written price before any work begins, so the number on the invoice is the number you approved.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely reset a single wobbling paver, re-sweep polymeric sand, or tighten a loose edge restraint if you’re comfortable with a rubber mallet and a level. These are low-stakes fixes. The line where DIY goes wrong is anything involving the base: if you’re seeing systematic settlement, line cracking, or pooling water, the problem is underneath, and a homeowner’s repair on top only hides it for a few months while the real issue compounds. Paolo, our lead paver tech, has pulled up homeowner repairs where the base was never compacted and the whole section failed again in weeks.
Pavers are heavy. A single 80mm paver weighs 20-plus pounds. A pallet is over a ton. Moving, cutting, and compacting materials at this weight without the right equipment leads to back injuries and broken pavers alike. Good work doesn’t need a sales pitch – it just needs to be done right. Call (254) 272-5876 and we’ll come look at the failure, tell you what’s salvageable, and give you a written price. The assessment is free.
FAQs

A properly installed Sterling paver driveway in Los Angeles lasts 20 to 30 years before the pavers themselves need replacing, though the joint sand needs re-sweeping every 3 to 5 years and the surface may need resealing periodically. What fails first in LA is almost never the paver – it’s the base, usually from water intrusion, tree roots, or poor initial compaction. Call (254) 272-5876 and we’ll tell you what’s still good and what isn’t.
Yes, in most cases a section repair works, provided the surrounding pavers are stable and the color match can be managed acceptably. We’ll assess whether the base under the failed area is the real culprit – if it is, a patch over soft base will fail again, and you’d be better off with a full replacement. Estimates are free, and the written price you approve is the price you pay.
A section repair typically takes one to two days. A full driveway replacement takes three to five working days from tear-out through compaction, re-lay, and joint sand. We’ll give you a written schedule before work starts, and you’ll get photo updates as the job progresses.
We stock common 80mm pavers in LA’s most popular Sterling colorways, plus edge restraints, joint sand, and base material, so smaller repairs often go same-day. For less common colors or 60mm legacy pavers, we source from local suppliers and typically have materials within two business days. Call (254) 272-5876 with your paver thickness and approximate color, and we’ll check stock while you’re on the phone.
No. We write the price before work begins, and the number on the invoice is the number you approved. The only exception is if we uncover a hidden condition that genuinely changes the scope – and in that case, we’ll show you what we found, explain the change, and get your written approval before proceeding. We don’t do surprises.
For most repairs and re-lays over an existing footprint, no permit is required. If your project expands the impervious surface area, involves substantial excavation, or sits within a Los Angeles hillside or coastal zone, we handle the permitting and inspections. We’ll tell you plainly on the first visit whether your job needs one.
Call (254) 272-5876 for a free estimate on your Sterling driveway or paver repair in Los Angeles. We answer live, 24/7. You’ll get a written price before any work starts, a schedule you can rely on, and a repair that holds up under LA sun, rain, and roots.
