James Hardie Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install James Hardie-compatible driveway and paver systems throughout Los Angeles, with most paver driveway installations running $8,260 to $21,240 depending on square footage, site prep, and drainage work. If your current pavers are shifting, cracking, or sinking into the soil, we can usually get eyes on it within a day or two and give you a written price before any work starts. Homes in Los Angeles deal with a specific set of paver problems: expansive clay soil in the Valley, tree roots in neighborhoods like Silver Lake and Echo Park, and hardscape settlement from years of drought-rewetting cycles. The first sign most owners notice is a paver that rocks underfoot, followed by sand washing out between joints after winter rains.
One thing worth saying up front: Sawyer Remodeling is an independent contractor, not affiliated with James Hardie. We install their siding and exterior products because they hold up in Southern California weather, and the same logic applies to how we approach driveway and paver work around Hardie-clad homes.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

James Hardie doesn’t manufacture pavers or driveway slabs. What they make, and what this page is really about, is the exterior envelope around your driveway: HardiePlank lap siding, HardiePanel vertical siding, HardieTrim boards, and HardieSoffit panels that wrap the garage face, the retaining walls framing your driveway, and the entry columns anchoring your paver layout. When we talk about “James Hardie driveway work,” we mean the intersection where your paver or concrete driveway meets the Hardie-clad structure around it.
The compatibility question that matters: HardieTrim butt joints against paver edges. HardieTrim boards expand and contract with temperature swings, and Los Angeles sees enough of those between August heat and January rain to open up gaps if the trim wasn’t flashed and caulked correctly. The OEM color-matched caulk from James Hardie’s ColorPlus line is the right spec here, matched to your siding’s color code (find it on the original order sheet or the barcode sticker on a leftover plank). Aftermarket color-matched caulks exist, but we’ve seen too many fade differently than the Hardie finish within two seasons. If you’re doing paver work near Hardie siding, use the OEM caulk or plan to repaint the trim line.

Signs Your James Hardie Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Pavers rocking or shifting when you walk on them. This means the bedding sand has eroded or washed out underneath. In Los Angeles, this often traces back to poor compaction during the original install or water running under the edge from a downspout pointed the wrong way.
- Sand or polymeric joint material washing out after rain. Joint sand should stay put. If it doesn’t, water is moving through the paver field faster than it can drain, which usually means the base layer wasn’t graded with enough slope.
- A visible low spot where water ponds after a storm. Los Angeles homes built on clay soil see more paver settlement than homes on sandy or rocky subgrade. A ponding spot means the base under that section has compacted unevenly and needs re-leveling, not just new sand on top.
- Cracks running through the concrete edge or apron where the driveway meets the garage. The slab at the garage door takes the most abuse: car weight, temperature swings, and water from the roofline. If the Hardie siding or trim right above that crack shows staining or swelling, water is getting behind the exterior envelope too.
- Gap opening between the paver edge and HardieTrim boards. Expansion and contraction moves everything. A gap wider than 3/8 inch means the original install didn’t allow enough movement, and water is getting a direct path toward your framing.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Los Angeles homeowners, here’s what you’re looking at:
- Paver driveway installation (new or full replacement): $8,260 – $21,240
- Driveway replacement (concrete or paver, tear-out included): $5,900 – $16,520
- Concrete driveway installation: $5,310 – $14,160
- Asphalt driveway paving: $4,130 – $10,620
- Driveway sealing (paver or concrete): $295 – $825
- Paver patio installation: $4,130 – $12,980
The range moves on three things: square footage, what’s under the existing surface (we often find collapsed base rock or tree roots once we open it up), and whether drainage needs correcting. Every quote from Sawyer Remodeling includes tear-out and disposal, base prep, material, labor, and a written line-item price before we start. No change orders unless you change the scope. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work for a full year after we close out the job.

AfterDIY or Call Us?
There’s a middle ground here. You can absolutely check a few things yourself: whether downspouts point away from the driveway, whether the paver joints still hold sand, whether any HardieTrim near the ground shows softness when you press on it. Those observations help you talk to any contractor intelligently.
Where DIY goes sideways is the base. Replacing a few pavers on top of a failed base layer is like painting over rot. The pavers will sink again in six months. Proper paver work needs excavation, geotextile fabric, compacted base rock in lifts, and a screeded bedding layer, plus the right edge restraint so the field doesn’t spread. That’s heavy work, and doing it wrong in Los Angeles clay means redoing it after the next rain season. If the failing pavers sit against Hardie siding or trim, you’re also now involving the weatherproofing of your exterior envelope, which is exactly the kind of junction where a bad DIY patch lets water into the wall. Call (254) 272-5876 and we’ll give you an honest read on what actually needs to be done. Luca Romano has been swinging tools in LA for over two decades, and he’ll tell you straight if the fix is a weekend job or a full base rebuild.
FAQs

A properly installed paver driveway in Los Angeles should last 25 to 40 years before needing a full base rebuild, though the surface pavers themselves often last longer than the base under them. The variable here is soil: homes on expansive clay in the San Fernando Valley or parts of Northeast LA see more movement than homes on the sandier soils closer to the coast. If you’re at 15 years and seeing widespread settlement, the original base probably wasn’t compacted to spec. Call us at (254) 272-5876 and we’ll tell you what you’re actually working with.
Yes, if the problem is isolated. A small sinkhole from a broken irrigation line or one section where a tree root lifted the edge can often be spot-repaired without tearing out the whole field. But if the base has failed across a large area, you’re throwing money at a temporary fix. The way to know is to pull up a paver in the worst spot and see what’s underneath. We do this during the estimate and show you what we find.
Most Los Angeles paver driveway replacements take three to five working days from tear-out to finished surface. That includes excavation, base compaction, paver installation, and joint sand. If we’re also replacing HardieTrim or siding at the garage face, add a day or two for flashing and caulking that needs to cure properly before it gets painted.
We source everything through our supplier network, which includes pavers, base material, edge restraints, and the James Hardie trim and ColorPlus caulk needed at the siding junction. We carry common material on our trucks and order project-specific pavers and Hardie pieces so they’re on site before demo starts. You don’t chase down materials; that’s our job.
