Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If you have an Oldcastle paver driveway or walkway in Los Angeles and a section is sinking, cracking, or pulling apart, the fix usually falls between $700 and $3,200 for a targeted repair, with full paver driveway replacements in LA running $8,260 to $21,240. We stock Oldcastle-compatible pavers in the common LA sizes and can typically match your existing pattern within a day or two of the estimate. Most homeowners notice the problem after the first heavy rain, when a low spot turns into a puddle, or when a paver shifts underfoot near the garage apron.
The good news: Oldcastle pavers are modular, which means you rarely need to tear out the whole driveway. The bad news: if the base underneath failed, replacing just the surface pavers is a temporary fix. That’s the distinction that decides whether this is a $900 job or a $9,000 job, and it’s the first thing we check when we walk the site.
Which Oldcastle Models This Applies To

Oldcastle has sold pavers and driveway systems under several lines over the years, including Belgard, which is the brand most Los Angeles homeowners have on their driveways. The two shapes we see most often in LA are the Holland stone (rectangular, roughly 4×8 inches) and the Mega-Arbel or tumbled pavers in 6×9 and 6×6 formats. If you don’t know which one you have, flip over a loose paver: Oldcastle and Belgard pavers often have a mold number stamped on the underside, but if that’s worn away, the dimensions and edge profile will tell us what we’re working with.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Oldcastle changed the chamfer, or edge bevel, on several paver lines around 2018. A new Holland stone from current production can sit slightly proud against an older one from 2012 even if both say 4×8. It’s a small difference, maybe 1/16 of an inch, but on a driveway in direct LA sun, that lip catches a toe or a tire and becomes the first paver to chip. For repairs, we match by profile, not just by size. When full OEM Oldcastle stock isn’t available in that profile, we source aftermarket pavers from the same regional molds and color-match them against the existing field. We’re an independent contractor, not an Oldcastle dealer, so we carry what actually works for LA installs rather than what a catalog says should work.

Signs Your Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- A sunken area near the gutter or garage apron. This is almost always base failure: decomposed granite or sand that washed out during a heavy El Niño winter. The pavers themselves are fine; what’s underneath them is gone.
- Pavers that rock or click when you step on them. The sand joints have washed out and the pavers are no longer locked together. Left alone, the edges start chipping and the pattern drifts.
- A crack that runs across multiple pavers in a straight line. Single pavers rarely crack on their own. A line of cracked pavers usually means the concrete sub-slab or compacted base shifted, which is a bigger conversation than a paver swap.
- Weeds or ants pushing up through the joints. The joint sand is doing about half its job. Polymeric sand, the kind that hardens, typically lasts 8 to 12 years in LA’s sun before it starts breaking down.
- Standing water that lingers for more than an hour after rain. Oldcastle pavers are permeable when installed as a system, but LA driveways are usually built over compacted base, not drainage rock. If water ponds, the slope has flattened and you’re looking at a re-grade, not a patch.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a targeted Oldcastle paver repair in Los Angeles, you’re typically looking at $700 to $3,200. That includes pulling the affected section, re-compacting or replacing the base material, reinstalling the pavers, and re-sanding the joints. A full paver driveway replacement in LA runs $8,260 to $21,240, and the spread depends on square footage, the condition of the existing base, whether we’re reusing pavers or laying new Oldcastle-compatible stock, and access to the site.
Every estimate from us is a written, line-item price before we start, so you’ll see what’s labor, what’s material, and what’s disposal. If we open up the base and find something the estimate didn’t cover, we stop and send a photo with a revised number before any additional work happens. The workmanship is backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise, which means if the repaired section settles or the pattern shifts within a year, we come back and fix it on our dime.
DIY or Call Us?
Re-sanding joints is a driveway maintenance task a homeowner can absolutely do on a Saturday: sweep polymeric sand into the joints, mist it with water, done. Pulling and resetting a loose paver or two is also doable if the base underneath is still solid. Where DIY goes wrong is when the base has failed. If you reset pavers over a washed-out base, you’ve spent a weekend building a slightly prettier version of the same problem. And if the sunken area is near a utility line or a gas meter feed, digging without locates is a risk you don’t want to own.
If the pavers rock across more than a few square feet, or you see a low spot that holds water, call us at (254) 272-5876. Luca Romano grew up in Silver Lake and has been working residential exteriors in LA for over two decades, so he’s seen exactly how our clay-heavy soil, dry summers, and sudden winter rains treat a paver base. FAQs

The pavers themselves typically last 25 to 40 years in LA’s climate, because concrete pavers hold up fine to UV and our freeze-thaw cycles are basically nonexistent. What fails first is the joint sand, at roughly 8 to 12 years, and the compacted base, which shifts as the clay soil expands and contracts with winter rain. Call (254) 272-5876 if your driveway is showing age and you want an honest read on what’s still good.
Yes, in most cases. If the pavers themselves are intact and the base under the failed area is still compacted, we can pull the section, re-set the base, and relay the pavers for a fraction of a replacement cost. If the base has washed out across a large area or the pavers are heavily chipped, a targeted repair becomes a patchwork job and replacement starts making more sense. We’ll show you both numbers and let you decide.
A typical targeted repair takes one to two days: day one for removal, base work, and re-laying, day two for compaction and final sanding. A full driveway replacement in Los Angeles usually runs three to five working days depending on size and access.
We keep common Los Angeles sizes and colors in our supply rotation, including Holland stone and tumbled 6×9 pavers in the three or four colorways we see most across LA driveways. If your exact color isn’t on hand, we source it through our regional suppliers, usually within a few days. We’re independent, so we’ll also match with quality aftermarket equivalents if the OEM price or lead time doesn’t make sense for a repair.
