Oldcastle Windows & Doors: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If you’ve got a failed Oldcastle window balance, a worn door roller, or a latch that won’t catch, we stock and install Oldcastle-compatible replacement parts across Los Angeles, with most hardware swaps running $150 – $425 installed. You’ll usually know something’s wrong the first time a sash drops hard, a patio door grinds off its track, or a lock needs three tries before it seats. The good news: almost all of it is repairable, and the parts are more standardized than you’d think.
Sawyer Remodeling is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Oldcastle. Luca Romano and our crew have been swapping and servicing these exact parts in LA homes for over two decades, and we carry the common failure items on the truck.
Which Oldcastle Models This Applies To

Oldcastle didn’t sell windows under one tidy series name the way some brands do. Depending on the era and the builder, your windows might be labeled Oldcastle, Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope, or carry a builder’s internal code. What matters more than the name is the hardware channel style: most Oldcastle windows in Los Angeles use either a block-and-tackle balance, a spiral balance, or a constant-force coil balance.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see most often in LA homes: two windows on opposite sides of the same room can use different balance lengths because rough openings were shimmed differently. A 28-inch balance from the window on the left won’t fit the window on the right even if both glass sizes match. Before you order anything, measure the metal channel length to the nearest inch and check the stamp code printed on the side of the old balance. If the stamp is worn off, we can match the part by sash weight.
For patio doors, the decision is usually OEM roller cartridge versus a quality aftermarket equivalent. Oldcastle’s OEM rollers are fine. But in coastal Los Angeles neighborhoods, we regularly see OEM steel rollers develop flat spots from grit in the track. A stainless-sealed aftermarket roller often outlasts the original at the same price. It’s the better call in places like Playa del Rey or San Pedro.

Signs Your Oldcastle Windows & Doors Is Failing
- Sash drops hard or won’t stay up. The balance spring has lost tension or come disconnected. On a double-hung that’s older than ten years, it’s almost always the coil or block-and-tackle assembly, not the window frame.
- Window tilts or falls when released. A failed tilt latch or a bent pivot bar. You’ll hear a click that isn’t actually locking anything.
- Patio door scrapes or jumps the track. The bottom roller cartridge is flat-spotted or the adjuster screw is stripped. You’ll see metal shavings gathering in the track first.
- Lock won’t engage or takes multiple attempts. The keeper slot and latch are misaligned, usually because the sash has settled or the weatherstripping compressed. This is a security problem, not just an annoyance.
- Draft you can feel with the window closed. The compression weatherstrip has hardened. In LA’s dry heat, rubber seals crack faster near inland zip codes than they do by the water.

The price splits into two honest parts: the hardware itself and our labor to pull the sash, swap the part, rehang, and test. Written pricing comes before any work starts, so the number on your invoice is the number you approved. Every parts repair is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the part fails or the install wasn’t done right within a year, we make it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely check without tools: whether the track is clogged, whether a tilt latch is visibly snapped, whether a keeper screw is loose, and whether the weatherstrip is peeling. Cleaning and tightening fixed more than a few problems over the years.
What you shouldn’t DIY: coil balance assemblies and spiral balances are under real tension. When they let go, they can take a chunk of finger with them. We’ve also pulled more than one window apart where a homeowner guessed the wrong balance length and then forced it in, binding the jamb and doubling the repair cost. If the spring is hidden or you’re not certain of the stamp code, call (254) 272-5876 and we’ll match the part right the first time.
FAQs

Count on 10 to 15 years for balances and rollers in most of LA, and closer to 8 years for sun-exposed weatherstripping on west-facing windows. Inland heat and coastal salt air both shorten the range, just on different parts. Call (254) 272-5876 and we’ll give you a straight read on what’s wearing and when to replace it.
Rollers can sometimes be cleaned and re-lubed; worn weatherstripping can’t. Balances are sealed units, so once tension fails you’re replacing, not repairing. We won’t sell you a part you don’t need, and a free estimate gives you the exact scope.
Most single-part replacements run 45 minutes to an hour and a half. A full patio door roller replacement on both panels might stretch to two hours. The Relay Visibility Guarantee means you get a live arrival time, before-and-after photo updates, and the price in writing before we start.
We stock the common failure items: balance assemblies in standard lengths, tilt latches, roller cartridges, and keeper hardware. Oddball sizes need a one or two day order. If we can’t get a true Oldcastle-specific match, we’ll explain the aftermarket equivalent and why it’s the better buy for your window. Call (254) 272-5876 to check stock before you wait.
Good work doesn’t need a sales pitch – it just needs to be done right.
