Schluter Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Schluter-compatible driveway and paver systems in Los Angeles, with most paver driveway installations running $8,260 to $21,240 depending on square footage, paver type, and base prep. If your current pavers are sinking, cracking, or separating at the edges, that’s usually a base failure or edge-restraint problem, not the paver itself. The good news: we carry the Schluter edge-restraint profiles and drainage strips on the truck, so a failing perimeter doesn’t have to mean a full tear-out.
Here’s what’s helpful to know before you spend a dollar: most Los Angeles driveway failures happen where the pavers meet the street or the garage slab. That transition point takes the most weight, the most water, and the most sun exposure. When the edge restraint lets go, the whole field starts to wander. We see it in Silver Lake, Echo Park, the Valley, everywhere with clay soil and seasonal movement.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter doesn’t manufacture pavers themselves. What Schluter makes are the profile systems that finish and protect paver installations: edge restraints, drainage channels, and transition strips that keep the paver field locked in place. The most common lines we work with are the Schluter BARA series for edge termination and the Schluter TROBA drainage systems used under paver bases in Los Angeles where runoff pools against the house or garage.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: the BARA edge profile comes in multiple heights to match different paver thicknesses, typically 30mm, 40mm, and 60mm. If you measure your paver at the edge and order the wrong profile height, the restraint either sits proud of the surface and becomes a trip hazard, or sinks below it and does nothing. Before you order anything, pull one paver near the edge and measure its actual thickness, not the nominal size from the manufacturer. We measure on-site before quoting, because a two-millimeter difference changes which profile we install.
For the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision: Schluter profiles are extruded aluminum with a specific anodized finish that holds up to Los Angeles sun without pitting. Aftermarket aluminum edge restraints exist and cost less, but we’ve seen them oxidize within two seasons when they’re in constant contact with irrigation runoff. For a driveway edge that’s getting hit by sprinklers every other day, we spec the Schluter profile. For a dry patio perimeter, a quality aftermarket equivalent can work fine. We’ll tell you which one makes sense for your specific site.

Signs Your Schluter Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Pavers at the perimeter are spreading outward. This is almost always an edge-restraint failure. Once the restraint lets go, there’s nothing holding the field together, and the outside rows start drifting into the lawn or the street.
- You can see a gap between the paver field and the garage slab or driveway apron. In Los Angeles, clay soil expands and contracts with moisture. Without a proper transition profile, that movement opens a gap that lets water under the pavers and accelerates base washout.
- Water pools against the house or garage after rain. That’s a drainage failure under the paver base. LA gets most of its rain in a few heavy storms, and if the base wasn’t sloped or drained properly, those storms are doing years of damage in a weekend.
- Individual pavers rock underfoot or sink in one corner. This points to base compaction issues or a spot where water has eroded the sand bedding. Left alone, the low spot becomes a collection point and the problem spreads outward.
- The surface has a whitish, chalky film that doesn’t wash off. That’s efflorescence, salt minerals wicking up through the pavers from moisture below. It’s not structural, but it tells you water is moving through the base in a way it shouldn’t.
Any one of these is worth a look. Two or more usually means the base or the edge system needs attention, not just a cosmetic patch.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Los Angeles homeowners, here’s what we quote and what drives the number:
- Paver driveway installation: $8,260 – $21,240. This covers removal of the existing surface, base prep and compaction, paver installation, Schluter edge profiles, and joint sand. The spread depends on driveway size, access for equipment, and whether the old base can be reused or needs full excavation.
- Edge-restraint replacement only: $945 – $3,540. If the paver field is sound but the perimeter has failed, this is a targeted repair, not a full redo.
- Paver patio installation: $4,130 – $12,980. Smaller footprint, lighter traffic, usually a faster job.
What’s included on every quote: a written price before work starts, line-item parts and labor, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If something isn’t right within a year, we make it right. No change orders, no surprise line items at the invoice. The number you approve is the number you pay.

AfterDIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely check your edge profiles: walk the perimeter, look for gaps where the pavers meet the slab or street, and note any spots where water collects. That’s useful information and it costs you nothing.
What you shouldn’t do is pull up edge restraints and re-set them yourself if the base has shifted. Once the base under the edge is compromised, re-setting the restraint is a temporary fix that fails again in months. And when you’re dealing with a paver driveway that’s seen years of vehicle weight, the base issues are usually deeper than the surface suggests. This isn’t high-danger work like a garage spring, but it is work where a homeowner fix usually costs more than calling us first. If you’re seeing edge spread or pooling water, call (254) 272-5876 and we’ll come look before you spend a weekend fighting it.
FAQs

The Schluter BARA aluminum profiles typically last 15 to 20 years on a properly installed driveway in Los Angeles, though UV exposure and irrigation water with high mineral content can shorten that on edges that stay wet. If yours failed in under five years, the installation or the base prep was likely the problem, not the profile. Call (254) 272-5876 and we’ll assess whether a replacement or a base fix is the right call.
Yes, if the paver field itself is still level and tight, the edge restraint can usually be replaced without disturbing the rest of the driveway. If the base under the edge has eroded or shifted, a repair without base correction will fail again, and that’s where we’ll be straight with you. The estimate is free either way.
Most paver driveway installations we do in Los Angeles take 3 to 7 working days from demolition to final sanding and compaction, depending on size, access, and weather. Edge restraint replacement alone is usually a one-day job. We keep you posted with before-and-after photo updates so you’re never wondering where the project stands.
We keep the most common Schluter BARA edge heights and drainage profiles stocked on our trucks for the Los Angeles market, so many repairs can start same-visit. Less common heights or finishes may need a supplier order, which we handle and confirm with a written price before any work begins. Call (254) 272-5876 with your paver thickness and we’ll tell you if we can start today.
