Sterling Kitchen Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

If your Sterling kitchen is showing its age, the full remodel in Los Angeles typically runs $16,520 – $53,100 installed, depending on cabinet layout, countertop material, and whether we’re moving plumbing or electrical. Most owners call us after a hinge gives out, a drawer slide jams, or a sink rim starts separating from the counter, and they realize the piecemeal fixes aren’t worth it anymore. You can usually get a written quote within a few days of our first visit, and we carry enough Sterling-compatible hardware on the truck to address the most common failure points while we map out the bigger plan.

We’re Sawyer Remodeling, a general contractor that’s been doing kitchen work since 2005, and Luca Romano personally walks every kitchen before we put a number in front of you. We’re an independent shop, not affiliated with Sterling, but we’ve worked on enough of their kitchens across Los Angeles to know exactly where they wear and what’s worth saving.

Which Sterling Models This Applies To

A galley kitchen opened up to the dining room with a new peninsula

Sterling kitchens in Los Angeles homes generally fall into three buckets: builder-grade cabinet lines from the 1990s and early 2000s, mid-range semi-custom lines installed during the 2010s condo boom, and the newer Sterling by Kohler lines that share sink and faucet hardware with Kohler specs. The cabinet boxes themselves don’t carry model numbers the way a faucet does, but you’ll find a stamp or sticker on the inside of a drawer box or behind the hinge plate on the face frame. That stamp usually references the series, the date code, and sometimes the finish code.

The compatibility gotcha with Sterling cabinets is the hinge drilling pattern. Older Sterling lines use a 35mm cup hole with a 1/2-inch overlay, while newer lines shifted to full-overlay 35mm cups with a different face-frame setback. If you buy a hinge based on brand name alone, you’ll end up with doors that hang proud or rub. We measure the overlay and bore distance before ordering anything. For OEM parts, Sterling cabinetry hinges and drawer glides are solid but not special, and quality aftermarket equivalents from Blum or Salice often outlast the originals at a lower price. We’ll give you the honest call on every line item.

Signs Your Sterling Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Doors that won’t stay closed or hang at an angle. The hinge springs have lost tension or the mounting screws have stripped out of the particleboard face frame. It’s the most common failure we see in Los Angeles kitchens that are fifteen-plus years old.
  • Drawers that stick halfway or feel gritty. The nylon rollers on the original Sterling slides have cracked or flattened. Once one roller goes, the drawer torques and chews up the rest of the track.
  • Sink rim lifting away from the counter or caulk that keeps splitting. This happens when the original install used builder-grade adhesive and the counter substrate has absorbed moisture over years of dish splash and humidity cycling.
  • Face frames swelling or peeling at the bottom corners. That’s water exposure from a slow sink leak or repeated floor mopping. The particleboard core soaks it up and the laminate starts to bubble and flake.
  • Shelves sagging in the middle of the cabinet run. Sterling’s builder lines used 1/2-inch particleboard shelves on wider spans, and they deflect over time. It’s not dangerous, but it tells you the cabinet box is nearing the end of its useful life.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A stone counter, tile backsplash and open shelf after a kitchen remodel

For a full Sterling kitchen remodel in Los Angeles, you’re looking at $16,520 to $53,100 installed. The low end covers a paint-grade cabinet replacement with laminate counters in a compact galley kitchen. The high end gets you semi-custom cabinetry, stone counters, a tile backsplash, and new hardware throughout a larger kitchen with an island. Here’s how the pieces break down:

  • Cabinet installation: $4,720 – $15,340
  • Countertop installation: $2,360 – $7,670
  • Backsplash installation: $945 – $2,950
  • Kitchen island installation: $3,540 – $11,800

Every quote we write in Los Angeles is a fixed price, not an estimate that floats. Materials, labor, haul-away, and any required permitting are all in the number you approve before a single tool comes off the truck. We back the work with our 365-Day Done Right Promise, which means if something’s not right within a year, we come back and fix it. No argument and no invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely tighten a hinge screw, adjust a drawer face, or recaulk a sink rim. Those are quick fixes that don’t require pulling cabinets apart. Where DIY goes wrong is when someone tries to level a run of cabinets that’s out of plane, or starts pulling base cabinets to fix a plumbing leak and finds the subfloor is soft underneath. That’s structural territory, and a bad fix turns a $3,000 repair into a $15,000 problem. Also, if you’re dealing with a gas line behind the range wall, don’t touch it yourself. Gas work in Los Angeles requires a licensed professional and a permit, and there’s no shortcut around that.

If you’re not sure whether what you’re looking at is a five-minute fix or a full gut, call us at (254) 272-5876. We’ll tell you straight and quote the work either way.
