Unilock Bathroom Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Unilock bathroom remodeling in Los Angeles typically runs $10,620 to $33,040 installed, depending on the size of the space, the materials you choose, and how much plumbing has to move. We stock Unilock-compatible pavers, wall block, and edge products on our trucks, which means we can often start a bathroom surface project without waiting on a supplier. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover their Unilock product has failed when they spot a crack, a shifted edge, or efflorescence that won’t scrub off, usually after a season of heavy rain or a small earthquake shifted the sub-base.

We’re Sawyer Remodeling, an independent Los Angeles contractor. We’re not affiliated with Unilock, but we’ve worked with their products long enough to know which lines hold up in our climate and which ones need a little extra care.

Here’s the thing about Unilock in LA: the product doesn’t fail often, but when it does, it’s usually not the paver itself. It’s what’s underneath. Our clay-heavy soil expands and contracts with every wet winter and dry summer, and that movement eventually shows up in your bathroom floor or shower surround. Luca Romano, our owner, has pulled up enough failed paver bases in Los Angeles to tell you the pattern before he even lifts the first stone. If you see a dip near the drain or a hairline crack running along the mortar line, that’s not a bad paver. That’s a base that’s been worked loose.

Which Unilock Models This Applies To

Unilock makes a few product families that show up in Los Angeles bathrooms, and they’re not all interchangeable. The big three are the U-Cara Multi-Face Wall System, the Thornbury and Mattoni paver lines, and the Brussels Block series you’ll sometimes see on a bathroom floor or as a shower pan surround. U-Cara is the modular wall panel system with the face plates that click onto a backer; it’s popular for accent walls and shower surrounds because it doesn’t need a mason to look right. Thornbury and Mattoni are smaller-format pavers, usually 60mm thick, and they’re often used on bathroom floors because the smaller profile works better with interior door thresholds. Brussels Block is the chunky one, 80mm thick, and it’s rare indoors but we do see it on Los Angeles hillside homes where the bathroom opens to a patio and the same pavers run inside to outside.

The compatibility gotcha: U-Cara face plates are not universal across the U-Cara line. The system changed backer profiles around 2018, and if you have an older install from before that, a current face plate may not seat correctly. You can check by removing one plate and reading the molded code on the back; it’ll start with “UC” followed by four digits. If your code is UC-14xx or lower, we’ll need to order the legacy plate or retrofit the backer. That’s the kind of thing that turns a two-hour job into a two-day job, and it’s why we ask for a photo before we quote.

For OEM vs aftermarket: with Unilock, we almost always recommend OEM. The color blends are batch-specific, and aftermarket pavers from a different pour will be visibly off even if the supplier swears they matched it. The one exception is edge restraint and polymeric sand, where quality aftermarket products like Techniseal perform identically and cost less.

Signs Your Unilock Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Hairline cracks running diagonally across pavers: this is almost never the paver failing; it’s the mortar bed or sand base shifting underneath. In Los Angeles, we see it most after heavy rain saturates the clay soil around the slab, then a dry spell shrinks it back.
  • Efflorescence that keeps coming back after cleaning: white chalky residue means water is moving through the paver and pulling minerals out. Occasional efflorescence is normal in the first year, but if it returns every season, there’s a drainage or waterproofing issue behind the wall or under the floor.
  • Loose or wobbly pavers near the shower drain: the constant wet-dry cycle at the drain weakens the bedding layer first. A wobbly paver there will crack next, and once one moves, water gets under the neighboring pavers and the problem spreads outward.
  • U-Cara face plates that don’t sit flush or pop loose: this usually means the backer board swelled from moisture, or an older backer profile is being forced to accept a newer plate. If a plate pops off, don’t glue it back; the backer likely has bigger issues.
  • Discolored grout lines between pavers that won’t come clean: darkened or green-tinted joints aren’t cosmetic. That’s organic growth that can only live where water is lingering, which points to a pitch problem on the floor or a failing waterproof membrane underneath.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A wood double vanity with two mirrors after a bathroom remodel

Here’s the straight number: a Unilock bathroom remodel in Los Angeles runs $10,620 to $33,040, and most jobs we quote land in the $14,000 to $18,000 range. At the low end, you’re looking at a small bathroom with a paver floor refresh, new U-Cara plates, and no plumbing changes. At the top of the range, you’re gutting the bathroom, moving the shower, installing new waterproofing, and running Unilock pavers floor to ceiling with a custom shower pan.

Project Scope Typical Los Angeles Cost
U-Cara face plate replacement only $945 – $3,540
Bathroom floor re-paver with base repair $5,900 – $14,160
Walk-in shower with Unilock walls $5,310 – $14,160
Full Unilock bathroom remodel $10,620 – $33,040

Every quote includes the written price before work starts, the pavers or plates, all base materials, disposal of the old material, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If a paver shifts or a plate pops within a year of the job closing, we come back and fix it. No invoice, no argument. That’s the standard on every Los Angeles job we take.

DIY or Call Us?

If you have a loose U-Cara plate, you can safely pop it off, check the backer for swelling, and snap it back on if everything looks dry and solid. You can also clean efflorescence with a pH-neutral paver cleaner from any hardware store. That’s where DIY should stop. Once pavers are shifting, cracking, or showing signs of water underneath, you’re past the point of surface fixes, and continuing to walk on a shifting floor can crack more pavers and push water deeper into the subfloor. A bathroom is not a patio: a failed base in a bathroom means water eventually finds the framing, and in Los Angeles, that means mold, dry rot, and a repair bill that doubles. Good work doesn’t need a sales pitch – it just needs to be done right. If you’re not sure whether your Unilock issue is surface-level or structural, call (254) 272-5876 and send us a photo. We’ll tell you what we think before anyone schedules anything.
